About me
Born in Cut Bank in 1950 and raised on the Williamson ranch by my Great Aunt Mildred till age 5. I was then shipped west when my parents divorced to live with my Dad's Mom, Mary Hudson(Babb Mt) in Everett Wa. Mom remarried in 1957 to a rancher, Gordon Lakey, from north of Chester Mt where I lived until 1966. Inner family conflicts between my stepdad and me sent me scurrying back to Browning to my Great Aunt Happys house in a stolen 57 Chevrolet. That short lived freedom landed me in the Deaconess Home for "Troubled"Children in Helena till I graduated in 1968. I drifted west to Spokane playing the local music scene locally and throughout Washington, Montana, Idaho, British Columbia and Alberta before ending up in Seattle. I married in 1978 and had four children before we divorced in 1987. I spent the next 20 plus years paying off my child support(August 2009) and raising my kids on the weekend. In 2001 I moved back to Montana and lived with my cousin Margaret (Penny) Cobell and attended the SKC for a brief time. I ran her and her sisters Loretta and Gail Lois down in 1992 after my Dad, Charlie died. Sad to say at his passing we had not seen each other for 37 years. I am grateful Penny's daughter Allysha and her husband (Jeff Waldrup) were living in Aunt Happy's old home and got me on the trail to finding the girls in Pablo and Ronan respectively. We were very close as children but unfortunately their brother Murray was not part of our reunion. As I mentioned I have four children, Marisa(31), my oldest is a neuro-surgery prep nurse in the ICU at Harborview in Seattle, Bettina (29) is a librarian in the King County system, Syreeta (27) is in Los Angeles pursuing a writing and performing career and my son Tom(25) is an independent computer services contractor in Seattle. I continue to play and perform in my self formed band Tanglefoot and work as an independent construction contractor (remodels-repairs etc) trying to make ends meet.

As of this I am in the process of getting an online guitar teaching site that would allow me to do one on one or class oriented instruction. I've been playing and performing since 1963 and have devised a methodology that addresses the technical as well as theoretical aspects of the craft that is logical and fun. I would like to offer this service to interested Tribal members at no charge once I have it up and running. I will keep you abreast of the site as it develops. Sometimes originality is a fresh pair of eyes and I would like to help any and all aspiring players to find their vision. I know things are not easy on the reservation and I hope to inspire the confidence and feeling of accomplishment that can come from learning an instrument. Thanks you in advance if this seems probable or possible. Vaughn McKelvey
